A racionalidade econômica do empresário familiar. Infoteca-e

A REGIONAL COMPARISON OF U.S. COTTON BASIS PATTERNS AgEcon
Seamon, V. Frederick; Kahl, Kandice H.; Curtis, Charles E., Jr..
The basis, defined as the cash price minus the futures price, is important when making marketing decisions. The cotton basis is calculated using the July futures price for six major cotton marketing regions in the U.S. for August 1993 to November 1997. Graphs of the average basis for the four complete crop years show that the basis generally followed the expected seasonal pattern. The basis tended to be weakest at harvest and to strengthen later in the crop year. However, a visual inspection showed regional differences in the seasonal pattern. Regional differences in the yearly variability in the basis were also observed. Thus, the usefulness of the average historical basis in predicting the future basis appears to differ depending on the region.

A revision of New World Brontaea Kowarz (Diptera, Muscidae) Zoologia
Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de; Pont,Adrian Charles.
Five species of Brontaea Kowarz (=Gymnodia Robineau-Desvoidy, preocc.) occur in the New World. B. humilis (Zetterstedt) has been introduced from Europe and is known from a few localities in eastern and Pacific coast Canada and USA. B. normata (Bigot) is an endemic Neotropical species. The other species, B. debilis (Williston), B. quadristigma (Thomson) (=cilifera Malloch, syn.nov.) and B. delecta (Wulp) (=arcuata Stein) occur throughout warm and temperate areas of the Americas. They are common filth flies, and are frequently collected in faeces-baited traps. Brontaea is probably a polyphyletic genus. The species discussed here appear to be correctly placed in the subfamily Mydaeinae. An identification key. descriptions, illustrations and geographic...

A revision of Omalanthus (Euphorbiaceae) in Malesia Naturalis
Esser, H.-J..
Omalanthus is revised for Malesia and the Solomon Islands. For this region, 13 species without subspecific taxa are accepted, namely O. arfakiensis, O. caloneurus, O. fastuosus, O. giganteus, O. grandifolius, O. longistylus, O. macradenius, O. nervosus, O. novoguineensis, O. populifolius, O. populneus, and O. trivalvis, and, as a new species, O. remotus. In addition to established synonyms, 17 species from Malesia are not accepted any more. The diagnostical importance of a peltate or non-peltate leaf base is especially doubted. Although detailed phylogenetic and biogeographical analyses were not made, the value of the established sections of Omalanthus is questioned. An alternative subdivision unites all Malesian taxa into four subgroups, each with a...

A RIFAMPICINA NA DESCONTAMINAÇÃO BACTERIANA DE EXPLANTES DE MAMOEIRO PROVENIENTES DO CAMPO Bragantia

A RISK PROGRAMMING APPROACH TO DESIGNING CONTRACTS TO REDUCE NITRATE LEACHING AgEcon
Chu, Mei-Chin; Swinton, Scott M.; Batie, Sandra S..
As contractual agriculture expands, contract design offers a non-regulatory opportunity to reduce non-point source pollution. A risk programming analysis of seed corn contract designs illustrates a tractable empirical principal-agent model, and shows that grower risk preferences affect contract acceptability and efficiency at reducing nitrate leaching.

A search for RFLP markers to identify genes for aluminum tolerance in maize Braz. J. Genet.
Torres,Giovana A.; Parentoni,Sidney N.; Lopes,Maurício A.; Paiva,Edilson.
The objective of this study was to identify restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers linked to QTLs that control aluminum (Al) tolerance in maize. The strategy used was bulked segregant analysis (BSA) and the genetic material utilized was an F2 population derived from a cross between the Al-susceptible inbred line L53 and Al-tolerant inbred line L1327. Both lines were developed at the National Maize and Sorghum Research Center - CNPMS/EMBRAPA. The F2 population of 1554 individuals was evaluated in a nutrient solution containing a toxic concentration of Al and relative seminal root length (RSRL) was used as a phenotypic measure of tolerance. The RSRL frequency distribution was continuous, but skewed towards Al-susceptible individuals....

A simple and rapid method for collecting saliva to assess sodium status in sheepum Ciência Rural
Ortolani,Enrico Lippi.
Fifteen lambs were fed diet with normal (0.11%) or deficient levels of sodium ( 0.035%), respectively, for five weeks on each diet. At the end of each period saliva was collected by three different methods: swabbing with a 5 x 5 x 1.25cm synthetic sponge, aspiration with a 15cm long plastic tube connected to a 20ml syringe and sucking with a 4mm x 45cm long plastic tube through a water-jet aspirator pump or an eletric motor pump. The volume of saliva collected/min and the salivary sodium: potassium ratio were analysed. Larger volume of saliva was obtained with the developed sucking apparatus than with the sponge or the syringe. There was no influence of the method of saliva collection on the values of salivary Na:K ratio in both periods. Nevertheless, the...

A simple model for the break-up of marine aggregates by turbulent shear ArchiMer
Ruiz, Jean-eric; Izquierdo, A.
A simple model for the break-up, by turbulent shear, of marine aggregates is proposed. Three factors are considered to control the rupture of aggregates of different sizes. First, turbulence exerts stronger shear forces on bigger aggregates. Second, big aggregates are weaker than small ones because their porosity increases. Third, the rate of rupture of an aggregate is considered to be dependent on the point in the aggregate where the rupture takes place. This third factor allows the determination of the size distribution resulting from aggregate break-up. By considering these factors the model predicts the break-up rates of aggregates of different sizes and the aggregates' size-distribution resulting from this break-up. Therefore, the model represents an...

A skeletal revision of Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) Naturalis
Jebb, Matthew; Cheek, Martin.
A skeletal world revision of the genus is presented to accompany a family account for Flora Malesiana. 82 species are recognised, of which 74 occur in the Malesiana region. Six species are described as new, one species is raised from infraspecific status, and five species are restored from synonymy. Many names are typified for the first time. Three widespread, or locally abundant hybrids are also included. Full descriptions are given for new (6) or recircumscribed (7) species, and emended descriptions of species are given where necessary (9). Critical notes are given for all the species. Little known and excluded species are discussed. An index to all published species names and an index of exsiccatae is given.

A SLUGGISH DEMAND COULD BE AS POTENT AS TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS IN CREATING SURPLUS IN STAPLE PRODUCTION: THE CASE OF BANGLADESH AgEcon
Ahmed, Raisuddin.
During the decade from 1982/83 through 1992/93, Bangladesh was able to increase production of rice, its staple food, at a rate modestly higher than the growth in population. However, the growth in per capita supply remained stagnant, because of the substitution of imports with domestic production. On the other hand, per capita income grew about 2 percent per annum. Nevertheless, the real price of rice declined about 2.7 percent annually. This decline in the rice price, on the face of a stagnant supply and increasing incomes, aroused suspicion whether income distribution has twisted against the poor who have a higher marginal propensity to consume rice compared to the rich. Three factors are identified that contributed to the decline in the rice price while...

A social accounting matrix for modeling agricultural policy reform in South Africa AgEcon
McDonald, Scott; Kirsten, Johann F.; van Zyl, Johan.
In this paper the format of a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for use as a database for the Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling of agricultural policy reform in South Africa is detailed. It is shown that the published South African SAMs impose limitations upon their suitability as databases for CGE models, but that they can be readily modified. An additional benefit of a SAM is its use as a framework for the specification of the behavioural relationships necessary to the development of a model. Finally, a Macro SAM for 1993 is reported and the proposed disaggregation of the agricultural sector is identified.

A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF DEMAND FOR BEEF, MUTTON/GOAT, PORK AND CHICKEN IN KENYA, 1961-1991 AgEcon
Chanyalew, Demese; Belete, Abenet.
This study examines the demand for beef, mutton/goat, pork and chicken in Kenya for the period 1961 to 1991. A log linear function was used to estimate direct, cross and income elasticities. The analysis reveals that the demand for beef and mutton/goat is elastic while the demand for pork and chicken is inelastic. The results of further analyses indicate that mutton/goat is a substitute to beef while pork and chicken are complements to it. In the mutton/goat equation, beef is a substitute to mutton/goat while pork and chicken are complements to it. Both the beef and the mutton/goat equations indicated an income elasticity of more than one. High income elasticities for these two types of meat perhaps indicate that if improvements can be made in both...
